On the last day of English class in 9th grade, Mrs. Stone, my English teacher, appreciated me for sharing my ideas in the class discussion and analysis writings. She pointed out how I often chose distinct, unconventional quotes for my evidence when analyzing the books we read in class. I was surprised by her comment, because my English proficiency was lacking compared to other students in class, for it was my second language.

When I think about her compliment now, it was more than just acknowledging my effort in class, she valued how different ideas and opinions from different backgrounds as well as experience coalesced in class discussions beyond what online summary notes would offer.

Like the ideas I analyze when I read literature, my art pieces I’ve created also reflect my own cultural background, struggles and experiences. Using different themes and concepts in philosophy to science, my artworks became a visual communication tool to deliver my viewpoints and interests to you, my viewers.

For example, I have created many of my pieces centered on the theme of communication, where I shared my experience with languages and cultures using universal symbols such as fish and the act of sharing a meal together. Also, some pieces reflect upon my concern for environmental science by depicting human effects on natural surroundings.

As the present world of art is experiencing turmoil thanks to the rise of artificial intelligence and derivative works created by such models, my hope is that through this exercise in scrapbooking my attempted ideas, materials and experimentations, I can eventually create something truly novel that I can call my own. This way I can honor the same creative spirit my English teacher praised me for, four years ago.
